Preventive Care

General Health Examinations and VaccinationsTVH Preventative Care

Preventive care is the best way to keep your animal healthy and happy before any potential problems arise. A wellness exam can identify issues that may require treatment, detect potential diseases early, and keep your pet on the road to good health.

At Transcona Veterinary Hospital, we conduct a thorough physical examination of your pet, from its eyes, ears, mouth, skin and paws, to heart, lungs, bones and digestive system. Wellness exams may be accompanied by blood, urine and heartworm tests, fecal exams, preventive de-worming and diagnostic testing, if need be.

Vaccinations are the root of disease control, and can keep both your pet and your family safe from life-threatening conditions. They are tailored to each pet’s individual health condition, age and lifestyle habits – and can be administered by needle or aerosol, depending on the vaccine.

Parasite Prevention

Heartworm Prevention
Heartworm prevention is especially important for the long-term health and wellness of your family pet. Heartworm disease is a serious, life-threatening disease that affects both dogs and cats. Left untreated, heartworms can damage your pet's heart and lungs and, in some cases, cause death.

Prior to treatment, we test for the presence of heartworms, and work to eliminate them before prescribing any preventative medicines.

When it comes to preventing heartworm disease, pet owners have a number of options, including popular medications like HeartGuard, Interceptor, Revolution and Sentinel. Our heartworm screening programs typically begin in mid-April, with medication starting June 1.

Pet Identification

For today’s active families, keeping track of your pet through micro-chipping offers peace of mind should your pet become lost. Micro-chipping permanently identifies your pet with a device the size of a grain of rice. It is implanted underneath your pet's skin, usually between the shoulder blades.

The microchip is encoded with unique information about your pet, which corresponds to a national pet database. If your pet is lost, the microchip can be scanned, and may help reunite you with your best friend.

Spay and Neuter Services

TVH Prevetative CareHere in the City of Winnipeg, our local by-laws state that any dog or cat over six months of age must be sterilized by a licensed veterinary surgeon, unless the owner has a valid permit. Many families choose to have their pets’ procedure done right here in the comforting environment of the Transcona Veterinary Hospital. Sterilizing your pet helps our community control the number of unwanted pets. It can also eliminate medical problems associated with hormonal imbalances.

Non-spayed females are more susceptible to mammary gland tumors and uterine infections. Having your male dog neutered can reduce his tendency to wander, and exhibit aggressive behaviour. Plus, it can save you a hefty fine!
